LESS IS MORE

By Myra F. Smith

BIBLE VERSE:  “But seek ye first the kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”  (Matthew 6:33)

Recently, I heard a reporter talk about a new donut, topped with Oreo sprinkles and whipped cream, which seemed to be a bit of overkill, but our society is all about “more”.  Burgers used to be small, with only one patty.  Now, there are double meat, double cheeseburgers, slathered with fried onions, guacamole, lettuce, pickles, and special sauce, on a sesame seed bun.  Buffet tables are stacked so high with food that you need two plates to carry it all.  But wait!  We have that too!

Here is what God says:  “Be not therefore anxious, saying, ‘what shall we eat? Or, What shall we drink? Or, wherewithal shall we be clothed?  But seek ye first the kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”  (Matthew 6: 31, 33)

It sounds so easy, doesn’t it?  Just let go and let God.  But how do we do that?   God is not going to swoop down from heaven and take care of us! Ridiculous!

I think the key phrase in this scripture, at least for me, is, “seek ye first the kingdom, and his righteousness,” for if God comes first, every single day, and in every decision we make, then he will provide for us…maybe not our wants, but our needs.

Seek God first. Pray for His will to be done.  And, just as He feeds the birds and clothes the lilies, He will care for me and for you.
