The Dark Night

By Myra F. Smith

Bible Verse:  “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became as it were great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.” (Luke 22:44)

Recently, we were witness to a horrific scene, played out in Colorado.  People were packed into a movie theater, watching a comic hero battle the forces of evil when the true face of evil emerged from a side door, and murdered men, women, and children, as they tried to flee.

We have many dark nights on earth, but we forget that even Jesus’ experienced a dark night of sorrow.  We want to focus on Jesus as our savior, master, redeemer, and Lord.  But, Jesus had times of sorrow and pain, like us.  It was in The Garden of Gethsemane, a place of solace and beauty, that Jesus went to pray about the days to come…days of crucifixion and death.

Jesus was “in agony” and his sweat appeared to be “giant drops of blood”.  He knew that His destiny was to bear the sins of the world. He would be beaten, mocked, abused, and unjustly condemned to a horrific death. He dropped to his knees and asked His father to grant Him a stay of execution, but it was not to be.

Even though God’s answer was “No”, Jesus’ answer was “yes”, for He said: “not my will, but thine, be done.”  (Matthew 22:42)  Jesus endured the dark night, and went from the beautiful garden to the old, rugged cross.  He became a prisoner and gave up His life so that we might be born again.

Rejoice!  For even on the darkest night, joy comes in the morning because Christ died for our sins.
