God Will Take Care of You
By Myra F. Smith
Bible Verse: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases.” (Psalm 103:2-3)
I was in my early thirties, when the first miracle happened. I had been incredibly ill for twelve years, experiencing dramatic and life-threatening mood swings; suicide attempts; multiple dr. visits, and diagnostic testing, but no viable diagnosis.
After the move to Liberty, we finally found a doctor who correctly diagnosed me with bipolar disorder. On the way home from the doctor’s office, I stared, gloomily out the passenger window, feeling anxious about the future, when I began to hear every word of this hymn. Before that, I could have recited the first and last verses, but not the rest. First miracle. Soon after, I was hospitalized for multiple tests. My last night in the hospital, I lay in the bed, praying to God, and cold to the bone. Suddenly, I felt wrapped in intense warmth I’ve never felt before or since. Second miracle.
At sunrise the next morning, an Asian nurse came in, carrying my first lithium tablet, and said, “Ms. Smith…you going to be okay now.” I took the pill as she walked to the door. She turned around, and with sunshine illuminating her face, said to me, “I think somebody upstairs looking after you,” and then she was gone. I knew I had seen an angel.
Imagine my shock when I began writing this and read about the famous retailer, J.C. Penney, who suffered at one time in his life from mental deterioration and despair. While hospitalized, he heard the words to this song coming from the chapel. He is quoted as saying, “I felt as if I had been instantly lifted out of the darkness of a dungeon into warm, brilliant sunlight.”
“Be not dismayed what-e’er be tide…beneath His wings of love abide…no matter what may be the test…lean, weary one, upon His breast…God will take care of you.”
Do I still have despair? Yes.
Do I always trust in God? Not always.
Does God take care of me every day? Yes, Yes, Yes!
One thing I have learned. I have learned that every day is a gift from God. That’s why they call it “the present.” And so, I leave you with this thought: No matter what may be your test… and we all have them…wake up each and every new and miraculous day in the sunshine of His love, knowing that He is taking care of you.
